Crystal barware – Crystal manufacturers apply a gold ribbon to trim the glasses and stemware as a decorative accent. Over time and through the use of gold banding can wear or scratch. Using abrasive cleaners to clean the gold-banded crystal can leave banding scratched and worn away in places. You can remove the damaged gold banding for a set of crystal barware without trim.
Mix baking powder with water to form a paste-like consistency. Baking soda, toothpaste and jewelers rouge abrasive cleaners that can cause light scratches on the crystal barware surface. Dip a damp cloth in baking soda, jewelers rouge or white toothpaste. Rub lightly back-and-forth over gold decoration. Continue to rub until the gold is no longer visible. You may need crystal professionally polished after removing the gold banding to remove scratches.
Moisten a paper towel with lemon juice and sprinkle salt over the top. Place the paper towel in gold trim or banding encloses the edge of the crystal barware, are glasses upside down on paper towel for 10 to 12 hours. Re-wet the paper towel with lemon juice as needed to keep it moist. Rub the gold banding with a nylon sheet until no gold banding left. Lemon juice and salt can cause a white mist on the crystal. You may have to repeat several times before banding removed.
